Encounters With The Obscure will be taking a summer break/ spiritual retreat and will be back with a new season of experimental films at the end of August/ beginning of September. We look forward to seeing you then.

Encounters With The Obscure invites you to its next screening on Thursday 18th July, 8:30pm at the Lumiere on Chatsworth Road. 

This week we will be showing Australian director Don Levy's 'Herostratus' (1967). The title comes from the name of the Ancient Greek man Herostratus who sought to immortalise his name by setting fire  to the temple of Artemis in Ephesus. 
In the film a young poet called Max hires a marketing company to turn his suicide into a media spectacle. He finds that his subversive gesture and his motivations are revealed as a desperate attempt to seek attention through celebrity.

Encounters With The Obscure is screening its next film on Thursday 27th June, 8:30pm.

Slava Tsukerman's 1983 'Liquid Sky', which we screened at the Meadows in the Mountains Festival is a journey into the world of 80s heroin addicts, models and performance artists in New York's Eastern Village. A small UFO lands on a penthouse which is inhabited by the model Margaret. They are on search for heroin and soon discover that the sensation of heroin is equivalent to that of having an orgasm. As a result, they start to suck out the human pheromones found in the brains of Margaret's lovers, who one by one start disappearing.

Encounters With The Obscure is off to Bulgaria next week screening films for the amazing 'Meadows in the Mountains' festival in the Rhodopian mountains.

Encounters With The Obscure is back on the 23rd May at 8:30pm with a screening of the beautiful 'Fata Morgana' (1971) by Werner Herzog

Herzog takes us through the demure scenery of the Saharan desert, accompanied by the story of the Mayan creation myth, narrated by Lotte Eisner, as well as a soundtrack by Leonard Cohen.

Encounters With The Obscure is back....

On the 9th May, 8pm we will be screening Patrick Keiller's feature-lenght essay fiction 'Robinson in Ruins' (2010).

Vanessa Redgrave assumes the role of the narrator, after the death of Paul Scofield who narrated the previous films. Redgrave takes the part of the narrator's former lover. As her predecessor she guides us through the adventures of the unseen, titular character, Robinson. There is a special focus on the importance of nature as we are guided through Oxford's picturesque surroundings. Keiller weaves the surreal, philosophy, architecture, the arts, science. politics, history and agriculture in this exploration of the natural world.
